Crafting Review: January/February

Image
Sooo...I may have completely missed posting a crafting review for January. Thus this will be a 2 month review! Pants  I got my Mughal pants from December done and I'm quite happy with how they turned out. This pattern is still a work in progress as these pants are what I call a "working mockup". This means that the pants are fully completed and I can wear them at events, but they are not fully finished on the inside. For example, the seams are just zigzagged instead of being flat felled, and they are also machine sewn instead of hand sewn. I plan to analyse these over a few events to see how they can be improved in fit and pattern, both to make them work better for my body and to see how I can bring them more into line with period form. Once that process is complete, I will most likely be making a new, fully finished, pair.  You also may notice that there are no pictures of these pants...which is because as I write this they are packed for Salon Artificum on Saturday and...

Project Review: Mughal Coat 1.0

Image
As is the way with many people who habitually make things, I saw a beautiful piece of craftsmanship and decided I had to have it for myself. Being unable to steal a coat from the Victoria and Albert museum, not the least because of the ocean in the way, I was left with the option of making one. So I grabbed some fur trim off of the giving table and traded a pan of cream cheese brownies for fabric and got to planning.   https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O16066/hunting-coat/       This absolutely beautiful piece is a coat from 1610-1630's India, from the reign of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. This particular form of coat, called a nadiri , was specifically reserved for Jahangir and those men whom he favoured. So I knew I couldn't make this coat exactly (unless any kings want to declare themselves my best friend?) but I could make something close.        I dove into my image resources to see what I could find that is more bef...

Crafting review: December

Image
Unsurprisingly, December has been a slow month for crafting. I have mostly been focusing on the holidays and a whole bunch of baking, rather than my projects. On the plus side, I tried a new recipe for Pfeffernüsse from the 1890s that was great!   Mughal coat: I got my first Mughal coat done! I am quite please with how this turned out in general. I think that I have a good idea of the modifications I need to do for my next coat, which was the real goal with this project (besides having a pretty coat). Full project recap will be coming soon.   Mughal paijama/pants:  I am working on a whole new outfit for myself, so of course I need pants! I am using the fabric from an old scrap project so I am having to piece this a little, but piecing is period. I have got this to the point of fitting well enough for a slim fit, but still being able to move around well. I sit on the floor a fair amount, so if I can't do that then there is a problem.  Next steps for this is taki...

Crafting Review: November

Image
I have been pretty busy this month, but still managed to get a decent amount accomplished! Herein lies my crafting review of this month. Sorry the pictures are sideways, I am doing this on my phone and it isn't playing nice. I got this blog set up! I promised a certain someone I would (you know who you are) and was encouraged to do so by my wonderful friend Jessica/Allegra who also set one up this month! Go check her out as well (https://artsandfights.blogspot.com/).   I also got a decent amount of work done on my project to embroider my courtier badge. I now have 1.5 rows of feathers left to do before I'm done. This has taken a while because I'm not a huge fan of embroidery, but I am liking how it is turning out. I have also been working on making a Mughal coat based off of manuscript images, an extant coat from the V&A museum, and a pattern book with an 19th century pattern. It has been really fun drafting this and figuring out how the period ones would h...

Tablet weaving patterns: Feather

Here are two versions of the tablet weaving feather design that I drafted. Please feel free to use!

A Brief Introduction

Hello internet wanderer, Welcome to my humble blog! I am Shahar Mulji (as of now) of the great Barony of Lions Gate, a humble courtier of the Barony and a maker of things.  This is intended to be a repository for my projects, research, and general SCA oriented musings. However given my general squirrelishness, we will see if I stay on track. If this is still a focused and active blog in 5 years, give me a high-five the next time you see me! Main interests and probable blog topics include medieval math, garb, the Mughal empire, card weaving, and persona research. I hope you enjoy learning along with me!   Yours in dutiful service, Sahar
